The reason I use Premier's small brass ear tags (http://www.premier1supplies.com/store/prod_display.html?prod_id=53&pcat_id= &cat_id=ALL&criteria=tags) on my day-old lambs is because the tags are the only ones small enough for these tiny ears. The tags are 3/4 in. by 3/16 in. If you get your ruler out and draw a rectangle of this size, you will see how small these tags are. Apply the tag to the lower edge of the ear (so that the ear doesn't flop over from the weight) and let half of it hang off the edge of the ear to allow for ear growth (you wouldn't want the ear to have to grow around the tag).

By the time the lamb is 4 months old (when you might sell it), the ear will be large enough for one of Premier's 2X tags.

The USDA and I have gone several rounds in my battle with them to understand that one size tag does NOT fit all size sheep. That is why I have four different style tags and applicators sitting useless on my shelf. The Premier brass tag and the 2X tag work best for me.

I will be giving a hands-on demonstration of tagging and will have samples of many tags available at the BBSAI Annual Workshop September 11/12 in Cobden, Illinois.

I have a blackbelly that has such tiny ears that there is literally no space for ear tags.
