I have talked to some of the oldtimers with goats and cattle. About a week
before the scheduled births, the ranchers put the stock in a lot where they
can control the food intake.
The soon to be new mamas are fed only in the late afternoon. For some
reason this forces the ruminants stomachs to be very busy during the night.
Because of the busy rumen the animals seem to give birth right at dawn or
during the day.
I did this last year with my goats. All kids were born during the day. No
getting up at night!!
One of the problems with this of course is the lack of clean bedding areas.
For one convenience you must give up something. To remedy this, just as
soon as the young one was dry, I moved the baby and mama out of the pen to
clean pasture.
Should work with sheep but since I have not had a problem lambing, there is
no reason to get up at night anyway! It doesn't matter when the lambs get
here just as long as they GET HERE SAFELY!
