sorry, didnt realise you were going for POSIX there...
how silly of me and my little bashy world :D

the error is:
"./bsetbg: bad substitution"

no error line or anything :-/

by inserting debugging output in the script i narrowed
the problem line down to

me=${0##*/}

(line 64)
