Thanks to several people that responded to my question about blackbox
decorations looking odd when I set my Macintosh to "thousands" of
colors, especially Jeff Raven and Bradley Hughes.

As they suggested, I used xdpyinfo to find out what color depths X is
running at. Here are the results:

Macintosh color depth | X depth | how blackbox decorations look
256 colors | 8 planes | degraded but usable; all controls visible; just
what I would expect
thousands of colors | 15 planes | degraded, unusable; many controls
invisible in some styles; no gradients
millions of colors | 24 planes | beautiful; gradients look great

I seems odd that one of X's color depths is 15 planes rather than 16 (as
in the example Jeff Raven sent me). Could this indicate a
misconfiguration of X? But why doesn't blackbox degrade gracefully with
15 planes?

David
