I don't know what you did, but 
! WM_CLASS(STRING) = "conversation", "Gaim"
bbappconf.6.classHint.class:    Gaim
bbappconf.6.classHint.name:     conversation
bbappconf.6.startOnWorkspace:   3

works perfectly now.
