Hey, thanks for the reply. Before I migrated to Snow Leopard, the shelf would stay visible until you minimized/closed it. I'm guessing that changed.
Having it disappear just doesn't make sense to me, at least not the way in which I use it, which is to drag commands from it to the Terminal. I tend to use it to drag the same set of commands to many servers via Terminal, so I'm dragging/dropping many times, having it disappear just doesn't seem practical.
