No, I don't believe there's a way to rank types, just individual items. I will 
say that the automatic ranking that happens as you use Quicksilver works pretty 
well, but that takes time.

One way to target a specific type is to use it's catalog entry. (In your 
Catalog prefs, make sure “Quicksilver Catalog Entries” is selected.) You should 
be able to search for “Applications (Catalog)” in the first pane, then select 
the “Search Contents” action. This will give you a blank Quicksilver interface 
and whatever you search for will now be limited to Applications. (It'll go back 
to normal the next time you invoke Quicksilver.)

If you want to do this often, you could create a trigger for it. I have 
triggers that take me straight to a search for Artists and one for Remote Hosts.
