I'm pretty sure I've identified the commit that broke proxy objects, but I 
didn't figure out how or why exactly. Can git blame tell us anything more than 
that?

Take a look at issue 8. Everything I've figured out so far is documented.

I tried to revisit it recently, but I couldn't figure out how to get the 
debugger to do what it was doing before.
