 My testing indicates that autofs works without the SMB and NFS filesystems
 configured into the kernel if you are not using these types of shares.  I
 am happily using it for floppy and cdrom.  I have no shares available to
 connect to.

 I do not know if this used to be needed and was changed at some point.  I
 am on kernel 2.6.15.6.
