#8951: rustc will apparently be needed for firefox-53. -------------------------+----------------------- Reporter: ken@… | Owner: ken@… Type: enhancement | Status: assigned Priority: normal | Milestone: 8.1 Component: BOOK | Version: SVN Severity: normal | Resolution: Keywords: | -------------------------+-----------------------
Comment (by ken@…): The more I look at rust, the more its build systems offend me: no doubt it provides the security its adherents claim, but for people who build from source on each machine it is a heavy burden (e.g. with the shipped llvm it builds for each possible architecture (AArch64, MIPS, PowerPC, SystemZ) and the only option is to not *install* the non-host architectures. I have now found, at [https://developer.mozilla.org/en- US/Firefox/Building_Firefox_with_Rust_code] that there may be a small delay: {{{ Disabling Rust code Support for building without Rust code was removed in bug 1284816. For Firefox 54 it's possible to build without Rust by patching out that and subsequent changes, but starting with Firefox 55 this becomes increasingly difficult and affects user security and available features. }}} That implies that ff-53 (not ff-52) will be the last non-rust version. But even for ff-54, patching out that commit plus all subsequent commits sounds a large activity, and obviously some of those subsequent commits will be security related. So, perhaps 6 weeks more than initially threatened. -- Ticket URL: <http://wiki.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/ticket/8951#comment:3> BLFS Trac <http://wiki.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs> Beyond Linux From Scratch -- http://lists.linuxfromscratch.org/listinfo/blfs-book FAQ: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/faq.html Unsubscribe: See the above information page
