Proved that hiding the rake program (from ruby) does not prevent this
working.
I hope I've fixed this in r23027, but I've reworked the instructions for
the book to (hopefully) match what we're doing for texmf. Meanwhile,
leaving open until the book has rendered and I can try to add an erratum.
