Samba seems to be needed by xffm. The book splits the packages into base
and extras. xffm is one of those "extras". If there is a dependency for
one of the extras, should it be listed in the book as an optional or is
the book attempting to only cover deps for the base? If the book is
covering all the packages, then a2ps is also required.

So my question is just what is the book's scope on deps for xfce; base
package deps only, or all the packages that come with the tarball?

The error seems rather specific, though I don't have samba to see if
the XF_SMBget_cache_file and XF_SMBget_netfile_cache_dir are indeed
samba.

Hrmm, I didn't see anything of particular use. I'll search again. This
problem didn't exist in 4.0.4, but did in 4.1.91 IIRC.
