About libXdamage, no, XFree86-4.5.0 doesn't install it.

Thanks for the info.

Gnome-mag will compile without it but it doesn't work.

Is this new? It used to work just fine when I was using XFree.
And it works just fine now with Xorg. Is there something we
need to add to the book about this? Please expand on "it
doesn't work".

I was wrong. It does work. I only installed it to investigate what you said in
your first message, I didn't realise it was a command line tool. When it didn't
pop up some slick gtk+ window I assumed it was borken. My bad. For the record,
when I configured it it said this

checking for XDamageCreate in -lXdamage... no
checking for -lXdamage in /usr/X11R6/lib... no
checking for -lXdamage in /usr/openwin/lib... no
checking for -lXdamage in /usr/openwin/sfw/lib... no
checking for -lXdamage in /opt/fdo/lib... no
configure: WARNING: Couldn't find the DAMAGE library. Check config.log for
details
checking for XFixesCreateRegion in -lXfixes... no
checking for -lXfixes in /usr/X11R6/lib... no
checking for -lXfixes in /usr/openwin/lib... no
checking for -lXfixes in /usr/openwin/sfw/lib... no
checking for -lXfixes in /opt/fdo/lib... no
configure: WARNING: Couldn't find the XFIXES library. Check config.log for
details
checking for pkg-config...

But then it compiled OK and it does work (I could post a weird screenshot if
you'd like...)

There should be some mechanism for clearing cr^* from BLFS. If a package is in
BLFS it should be a mark of endorsement, that this is a good package. If you
don't clear out the old rubbish the book will steadily fill up with things that
previous editors liked but which have now gone stale.

Please give examples. Your idea is good, but without some examples of
packages that you consider could be removed, how can we even begin to
consider the idea. I realize you mentioned Sawfish. I don't use it,
don't know a thing about it, nor have I ever attempted to build it.
Can't speak for others.

Sawfish obviously, and XFree86 as Bruce said. But as I've said before, I'd like to see glib-1, gtk-1 and all the packages that depend on them removed. Obviously that's going quite far, too far for many people, but we could make steps in that direction, perhaps by replacing Xmms with Beep

There are plenty of other things that should be in BLFS. A peer to peer
application (Gtk-Gnutella) a GUI video editor (avi-demux) and the file browser
ROX

Andy, please submit hints, or better yet, an addition to the book via
the XML sources. This is the quickest, best way to get something added.

Uh oh. That sounds hard, I'll need to look into this, probably at the weekend
if I have some more time. I'll be back...
