The other issue is that evidently the developers of gimp recommend it.
They do have it as a default in configure.

The bottom line is that there are a lot of things we recommend in BLFS
based on personal opinions.  I don't see anything wrong with that.  When
there are dissenting opinions, it gets a little trickier.  In any case,
as long as opinions are explained, I don't see an issue.  The users can
always decide for themselves.

BTW, recommended dependencies are *always* opinions.
