My feeling is that only the sed is something we should consider
doing. We can't expect folks to install the CODECS, so we can't
default to putting the configure switch in. We make the suggestion
that there are codecs they can install, and how to make MPlayer
use them. That seems to be enough. Others may feel differently.

Though others may feel differently, I'm against the CFLAGS and
--disable-ossaudio ideas.

The initial post was send by me to Bruce.

Looking at the configure script:

---------
MPlayer compilation will use the CFLAGS set by you, but:

*** *** DO NOT REPORT BUGS IF IT DOES NOT COMPILE/WORK! *** ***

It is strongly recommended to let MPlayer choose the correct CFLAGS!
To do so, execute 'CFLAGS= ./configure <options>'
--------

The script does have optimization set to -O4, but there have been no
reports of failure because of it.

Yes, you're right. There have been not any error reports, yet. Fact is that -O4 isn't officially supported by GCC. Maybe in the future there will be any additional -O4 support. But up to now, there isn't one. So I think that such flags shouldn't be used, because in the future there _could_ arise some issues.

In the end this issue should be adressed to the developer of mplayer. My opinion is that it should be tried to keep the things close to the standards to avoid any future problems. On the other hand I can understand that BLFS tries not to interfer into the development of the original developers. I hope no one is displeased by my objections.

Something different: Thanks everybody who made BLFS, it helped me alot building an usable linux system from scratch.
