If this is XFree86, it would be good to make a backup copy of /usr/X11R6 before proceeding. 'cp -a /usr/X11R6 /usr/X11R6-bak' should work well. Xorg-6.9.0 works fine with new mesa (it's only a tiny version change 6.4.1-6.4.2), but I can't personally vouch for how well it'll work with XFree86. Anyway, skip the first two instructions (the find and sed) and change the /usr install path to /usr/X11R6. Also, remove the 'X11' from the module path. New instructions will be in the book in about 5 minutes (it'll be a while before it renders still).
