Mplayer doesn't need a dvd symlink. Cdparanoia also take a command-line option to a device node ('-d'). Okay, this has nothing to do with udev. But still, at least I always use the mplayer thing, as I don't care so much about a dvd-symlink, the cdrom-symlink is fine for my taste.
