Are you following a fork ? Freedesktop.org doesn't seem to mention a 1.0a-1, but it does show 1.0.1 and 1.0.2 as bugfixes. I can't see anything between 0.50 and 0.60.
If you are happy with a well-tested old version, use whichever version fits.
