At least in Debian, KDE3 stores configuration in $HOME/.kde, and KDE4 does this in $HOME/.KDE4. Therefore, there are no conflicts. Moreover, ad KDE4 is an incomplete desktop environment, I would consider any setup that doesn't allow for parallel installation of at least full KDE4 plus Konversation (still the preferred IRC client for KDE developers, as evidenced on #kde on freenode) as broken. -- Alexander E.
