I think there is a ~/.kde4 to avoid conflicts.

There really ought to be a way to mix/match.  There is nothing to 
prevent running konsole from either ked3 of kde4 in gnome, so I think 
trinity should be able to run KDE4 apps without conflict.  Of cours I 
don't know for sure until I try it.
