I needed ppp for a Huawei mobile broad-band modem, as i did not have 
network-manager, only wicd, and this did not do the connection. It was in a 
hospital, a relative was submitted to two surgeries.

If others have done without it, please post, if not, it seems better keeping 
ppp.
