That's interesting. Glibc 2.17 and GCC 4.8.0 here. Yet I've built 
alsa-lib without any problems. It looks that stdlib.h pulls sys/types.h 
include. But from what I've seen, it appears to rely on some definition, 
which probably the package that failed for you didn't had defined.
