This was going to be a question for help about why, 3 times in the last 4 days, I've left this system (running lxdm, logged in to xfce) and come back to the login screen. I've proved that it isn't happening every time xscreensaver cuts in, ConsoleKit is running, but I have avoided PAM.
But when I was writing a mail about that, I looked at Xorg.log.old and saw there had been a segfault in /usr/libexec/Xorg.bin, possibly in the intel_drv module. :-( This is with xf86-video-intel-2.99.914 and the options we used to use (something about drm3 was changed for the current driver). Until now I haven't used a desktop environment, nor a desktop manager, but I wanted to see if this would look like a viable thing to run on my netbook which is still struggling with ubuntu. I've certainly seen occasional Xorg segfaults in the past few months, more on ati than intel, and I thought they were all on -rc kernels, but not sure. Whatever, they seemed to be infrequent. So - I suppose I will have to build the newer intel driver and see if that helps. Meanwhile, this is a placeholder in case anybody else is seeing Xorg segfaults in -rc6 with the 3.16.2 kernel. On my ATI (Aruba) box Xorg seems fine, I haven't built 7.6 on my other ATI at the moment (still building libreoffice on the slow one). ĸen -- Nanny Ogg usually went to bed early.
