In other words, this does rely on elogind, so I need to build a
newer system before I can test if Xorg without suid works on my
hardware (no point building elogind, and rebuilding xorg-server and
whatever else got references to elogind, that will just be a further
distraction).
On the current (intel) system startx fails (and hangs until I hit
Ctrl-C) when /usr/libexec/Xorg is not suid, which is what your
explanation above implies.
