Yes, HSQLDB was the DB engine (written in Java), functions like mail merge 
require it as well. At one time, the help and video wizards did too, but I'm 
hopelessly out of date WRT LO. I think it was still OpenOffice last time I 
touched the page, but I had significant patchsets from go-oo in there (go-oo 
code base later became what is LO).
