I just installed ALSA 1.0.7 lib and utils. The

compiliation and

installation went fine. I then installed XMMS. I

was unable to get

XMMS to play a file as any user except root.

Also, I could not play any

file using aplay on the command line as any user

except root.

After an hour or so of frustration, I tracked down

the

/etc/udev/permissions.d/25-lfs.permissions file.

I changed the line:

snd/*:root:audio:0660

to:

snd/*:root:audio:0666

and now I am able to use both aplay and XMMS as

other users.

Though this is one way to get the audio system to
work for non-root
users, the preferred method is to add the users
requiring access to
the sound devices to the 'audio' group.

This will be addressed in future versions of BLFS,
and it may be
something we want to sneak into the 6.0pre1 version
(a mention of
adding users to the 'audio' group).

who does not require sound on a desktop or a laptop unless he/she is deaf? Who wants sound on a server? :)

I'd just like to thank everyone for their replies. I switched to the audio group method and reset the permissions on my sound devices. I do think it would be a good idea to add this to the configuration section of ALSA setup.

Thanks again
