Honestly, if you were talking about java or openoffice, or maybe even
firefox itself, i'd say "yeah, just use a binary, save the trouble".
but zip has never given me problems. are you sure you applied all the
patches? and that there are no other odd issues that might cause those
errors? I have found that zip is really handy to have around,
especially if you want to use xmms or bmp with winamp skins, which are
all zipped up... or if windows users send you zip files, etc.
