Depends on what software you're willing to install to get it, but I use Tomboy for that kind of thing, both at work and at home. It's an essential program for me - I create notes for sorts of things, including problems and solutions I find while trying out a new piece of software. http://www.beatniksoftware.com/tomboy/ It's written with Mono and Gtk# though, so you may not find it acceptable (either because you consider Mono to be the Devil's work, or because you don't want to install all of the requirements for Gtk#).
