Recently I got sound and video working, which prompted me to build a lot more for my desktop. There are huge chunks of blfs that I don't build (e.g. cups, some of the sound and video libs, server stuff), but I worked out where I think the gnome stuff fits in. Attached is the order I used for my current build, including comments for where I think the missing gnome stuff belongs (NB that is gnome-2.8, 2.10 will be different) - I'm thinking about trying a fuller gnome desktop. AFAIK, I have adequate functionality from everything I build.
As you get used to blfs, you'll find that you don't like some of the alternatives and that some of the optional dependencies don't give you any benefits (that is, it's a personal choice on what to include). This is good, it allows you to make the build more manageable. Ken -- das eine Mal als Tragödie, das andere Mal als Farce
