The log entries showed:

"login(pam_unix)[797]: authorization failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=tty2 ruser= rhost= user=chrisd"

Unless I'm missing something (and I probably am), this doesn't tell me much other than PAM module pam_unix (which is used rather extensively) was unable to match user chrisd with the password that I entered. I'm still not sure if this is a PAM problem or a shadow problem...
