I'm getting ready to install Gimp-print. Actually I want it only for
the plug-in capability for GIMP. The "command explanations" in the book
say:
--enable-cups-level3-ps: This option causes the build process to
generate PostScript level 3 PPD files instead of level 2 ones.
I don't know what the difference is. I've been to hplip, foomatic,
cups, linuxprinting.org and google looking for a definition, but I can't
find one. I think, from what I've read, that level 3 prints with better
resolution, but I'm not sure. Nor do I know if my HP PhotoSmart P1000
can use a level 3.
I would appreciate any enlightenment in this area or directions to some
document that I can read to learn this.
Thanks

Actually, I doubt the photosmart printer cares anything at all about the
postscript version, but in the linux printing process it does. A very
brief, non technical explanation: Postscript is just a printer controll
language, newer versions (level) of postscript support higher
resolution, more colors, and provide more tricks to do with the dots.
Only higher end printers support PS directly, which is where Gimp-print,
Cups, hpijs, and the foomatic and pstoraster scripts come in. *nix
handles every print job in postscript and then sends it to the print que
where cups and friends poke and prod, and twist and contort it into a
language that the printer understands. In short, you most likely will
want level 3. http://www.linuxprinting.org/ should be the definative
resouce for you to learn the details of the printing process, even has
some ramblings about ps language commands burried in there someplace.
