Maybe somewhere near the beginning of the BLFS book there should be something about how "many software package installations have long and sometimes complicated commands" (and not just commands - sometimes long configuration files, like Xorg/XFree86's host.def), followed by a link to the section on installing GPM. This should at least reduce the number of people who have these kinds of problems...
