Old habits, I suppose.
I find it a lot more convenient to try and build every module I think I
might need and then have them as the need arises. Take for example, my
last network problem which was traced to acpi and the nic being given an
IRQ of 20 which it didn't like. By use of modules, I had this
information on stdout. When i booted with NOAPIC ACPI=OFF it gets irq 11
and all is well. I am attracted to the 'make allmod' in the kernel as a
way of having the ultimate in versatility in a reasonable sized kernel.
I don't know what the next thing to be plugged into my box is going to
be. A longer term aim is to have some foreign character sets set up. The
kernel for that lot would be 10mb!
And it is possible. Alexander seems to manage it but is understandably
tired of explaining. Hotplug is stable but still undocumented in user
speak. Udev isn't much better but seems to work these days for me.
