Been there, done that. I used to build with LDFLAGS=-s, until the day I needed to debug things. The LFS book is correct that _most_ people don't ever need to run debugging tools (we don't even provide links to strace or gdb because they're CMMI packages), but certainly on a development workstation it can be helpful to keep them around.
