I had the same symptoms and error message. Followed the instruction suggested by
DJ Lucas
Reread the configuring X section...specicifically the " Adding TrueType
Fonts to X" section.
Indeed the error was due to the improper configuration of the TTF section. Upgraded the fc-cache.
Made again a make clean. Configure.Error: had to settle manually the pkg-config path.
Configure worked perfect. Make and make install according the blfs handbook.
I am running Firefox 1.0.6.
