I would like to publicly apologize to you for my previous comments.
*I* am the one that should be reading the useradd man page. Justin
was kind enough to clue me on the command, so I'm going to try to
see if I can't figure out what is wrong with why the command doesn't
work for you.

What are the permissions on /dev/null? Perhaps your message is coming
from the fact that you can't read /dev/null?
