Just out of curiosity, why would one need to build the alsa-oss

Is there some sound software out there that needs it?

The only things I'm aware of are mozilla plugins. Flash and realplayer seem to only work with oss

I can't speak for flash, but on i686 realplayer gets by with the kernel's oss emulation, no need for an add-on alsa-oss, and no libaoss on my systems.
