That are most concerned to me, adding dependencies for hplip. Would
they conflict with other packages already installed on BLFS 6.1? I can
install hplip based on my previous experience.

If you can build LFS/BLFS, you have plenty of experience. When I built hplip, I had many of the same questions, and I resolved them by installing the packages. I figured, "Hey, the worst I can do is break it. If I do, I can always recover. ('make uninstall' or 'rm -R ..... :-) ) However, my fears were groundless and so far I haven't had any difficulties.

 This is not the first
time for me encountering printing problem.
Me too. When I first started linux I just couldn't get my printer to work--with GNOME or KDE. But once I figured it out.....

Sorry, no, only TWM as window manager. Neither I'll install KDE nor
GNOME.
Your install of hplip MAY fail because of the icon thing. I don't know. My recommendation is to go ahead and see what happens.

The second situation may be pertinent to BLFS. Hplip wants to put
its start-up scripts in /etc/init.d. Of course, in BLFS, we have only /etc/rc.d/init.d.

I think I can overcome this problem with the available documents on my
possession.
If you're logging your builds and installs, you'll be able to see whether either of these issues--icons, /etc/init.d--is causing you a problem.

Anyway I'll install ESP Ghostscript-7.07.1 later to see whether I can
solve the problem. I checked the list of supported printer on
Gimp-Print-4.2.7;
http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/p_Supported_Printers.php3
HP Deskjet 5740 is not there.

If NOT I'll skip installing HP printer and move on building BLFS 6.1
I feel compelled to give you a "gentle, but firm" reminder of what I think BLFS is all about. It's YOUR system. The BLFS book is not a "list of things to install." Choose what you want for your box and then install the needed packages. This may mean, especially for hplip, that you may have to travel outside the BLFS boundary for dependencies. In Mandrake (ooops now Mandriva--how eloquent), all these things were installed by default and I didn't have any problems. Maybe you also have experienced this in your work with other distros. With BLFS you don't have to deal with what other builders say you need. For example, if you're not going to routinely print graphics from GIMP, you don't need gimp-print. There's another, rather roundabout, way to do it. On the other hand if something won't run because something else is not there, that's a different story. (hplip and foomatic).

For right now, I still recommend, if you really want to use the hp drivers, you install what you need to get your printer running in BLFS. If that route is hplip and the install fails, please post here. I'll have to find it, but there's a thread on the hplip forum that tells how to hack the install script for the things I have described.

Good luck.
