This is a video problem... wrong drivers, or too many modules. What's your video card?
Agreed. Although I'd also make sure you have the fonts side sorted out in xorg.conf, ie. correct paths. That would simply isolate the problem.
And just a shot in the dark: you did compile bitmap fonts in, right (host.def)? I once thought they were somehow unnecessary and Xorg simply refused to cooperate ;-)
