Sounds like something I observed when playing with the 7.0 RCs - the X
server would exit shortly after starting, complaining on the console
about not being able to find the Fixed font. In my case, the problem was
simply that I'd not installed one of the font packages, although from
memory it can also be reproduced if the "fonts/misc" directory isn't in
the FontPath in xorg.conf.
Jan - is this more or less what's happening with you, or completely
different? If so, what environment are you trying to run? Default is
probably TWM, which I don't think uses font-config, but instead uses the
traditional X font setup (i.e FontPath entries). Maybe your xorg.conf
file doesn't point to all the font directories?
Simon.
yes indeed, but for the moment I must say I am leaving the grounds...
The reason I tried the 7.0 distro was that the build of the 6.9 failed,
but now I found out what I can do about it... I am going back to 6.9
The solution lies in the 'sed' instruction that's given before the
configuration of the xorg-7 server.
Anyway, I tried several things to make it all succeed with the fixed
font. I even recompiled fontconfig, without much success.
So that will definitely be a point of great attention when bringing 7.0
into the book. Also: which are the 'core' font packages? (wich contain
eg. the fixed font?)
Kind regards,
Jan
BTW: I even didn't get upto the xinitrc file, because the 'X -config
xxx' command already failed... I don't know why there are fonts used??
