Thx, this did the trick. If the creators of the book are reading this, they
might consider adding a note in kdebase with this reference. In my case, as I
patched x.org 6.9 and the version in the book is 6.8.2, I just followed the
instructions in the package and hadn't read the ones in the book. That's why
I hadn't seen it.

I don't think it's necessary to add anything to the KDE instructions,
especially since this issue does affect more than just KDE. Maybe the
existing instructions in the X config section in the book could be
worded a little more strongly...right now it just says that if the
.ICE-unix dir in /tmp is not owned by root it causes X to delay
startup...maybe it should also say that it causes some X programs not to
work at all.
