I've got some experience with this, but I don't know if it'll help all that much. I've used the HPIJS system for a couple of different laser printers and was pretty pleased with the results. When set up right (I think it requires foomatic) it works well with cups and pretty much just works. Since it is HP sanctioned, you would expect to get close to full functionality. I've also got a 1.5 year old Epson R200, and a just bought R320 (hey, what can I say? It was open box, and the ink was worth what I paid for it). These two use the same print engine and the same ink. Since there's no good alternative, I've been using gutenprint drivers for these. Until the latest release (5.0rc2?) the colors when photo printing have needed alot of tweaking. The newer drivers seem to have corrected that, but it doesn't seem to frame exactly right. Everything else seems to work though, including CDprint - which I've used alot. The real issue for me is that the HP drivers won't work when printing from the Gimp. Gutenprint has a bunch of it's own HP drivers, but I can't speak for their quality - they're probably at least OK.
