Did you by chance compile the sun drivers? That will give the exact symptoms you have described. If it locks again, do Ctrl+Alt+BkSp, and then Ctrl+Alt+Del and see if you get a graceful reboot out of it. If you did compile and install the sun drivers, just remove them manually.
