Whoops, sorry. Thought this question was about gtk2, not gaim. Maybe gaim makes some nasty assumptions in it's configury. Still the solution provided by Peter should be correct.
Yes Peter did provide the right answer to my problem. Reading throw the Xorg 6.9.0 part of the book i got the impression that i would be installing Xorg in the /usr directory that's why i didn't create the symlinks. With the links created gaim compiles fine.
