An update on this, since I've had a bit more chance to play with it on
my system. Interestingly, the problem disappeared when I turned on
sub-pixel font rendering in the Gnome preferences - anyone seeing this
kind of problem might want to try doing the same... see if it works for
them too.

Not sure how to explain it - perhaps changing this setting means fonts
get rendered via a different mechanism, just as turning RenderAccel off
does.
