Now it does, but when I reboot the system after installing the kernel I get a lot of lines reading: ./hotplug.functions: line 113: /lib/modules/2.6.11.12/modules/isapnpmap: No such file or directory

Known bug with /etc/hotplug/pnp.rc. Remove that file, because it only loads modules and you don't even have support for them.

I removed teh /etc/hotplug/pnp.rc file the I no longer get any of the above
messages. Thanks!

Do I need to enable "Loadable module support" in order to use the PPPoE module?

No.
