I have no clue. Right off I notice there is no leading slash in the
path. "/var/log..." as opposed to "var/log..."

I used the fakeroot method of package management, and only had trouble
with fcron. once installed, fcron owned all directories on the way to
/var/spool/fcron/.
I hope you double checked ownership of the parent directories.
