That doesn't say too much. Could you try running gdm with debugging?
Try adding the following to /etc/gnome/2.18.3/gdm/custom.conf (the
[debug] group may already exist):

[debug]
Enable=true
Done that.

Then run gdm (as root) and don't let it fork:

gdm -nodaemon

Sorry, I don't know what fork means in this context.  So don't know how to stop 
it.

Whatever I try I cannot get any output having added the debug 
arguments. Nothing is printed to STDOUT or file.
