Well, my fonts (unlike a lot of stuff I customized) were in the right place and had the appropriate fonts.alias files and suchlike; just in case I went ahead and re-ran mkfontscale and mkfontdir on each directory but it didn't help. I was bracing myself to uninstall X and reinstall it a third time, this time not changing so much as one byte from the book, and to prepare for that I started reading the whole blfs book from top to bottom to see if there were any libraries or utilities I had forgotten to install along the way. I got to the section on fontconfig, where it says to make a symbolic link from /usr/X11R7/lib/X11/fonts/OTF and TTF to /usr/share/fonts... and that's when the light bulb finally glimmered on, three days late. I had installed fontconfig before X, so I planned to go back afterwards and make those links... and totally forgot. When I set up the links, suddenly everything works. Go figure! I don't even rate power user... power imbecile is more like it. -- Peter B.
