Sorry, i made a typo - the command in my start-script actually reads:-

compiz --replace ccp & emerald --replace &

The ccp option tells Compiz to read it's configuration-settings from 
ccsm, which can include the decorator to use, making the 2nd part 
redundant. Having said that, emerald may be worth using while setting 
everything up, as it looks very different from the KDE themes & will 
avoid potential confusion. I use it all the time simply because i prefer 
it's appearance.

As an example, i had to explicitly load Xorg's composite extension in 
spite of Xorg-7.2 supposedly having it built-in. This may be unique to 
Radeon cards, but illustrates one of the less obvious pitfalls that can 
crop up.
